Also known as pedodontics, pediatric dentistry is the subsection of dentistry involved in treating children from birth through adolescence. Pediatric dentistry differs from adult dentistry because children and adolescents are growing, and as a result their mouths are changing. Yet, this branch of dentistry simply focuses on understanding the cause and prevention of disease, while balancing the need to form trustful, confident relationships with young patients. Moreover, this form of dentistry is also more focused on teaching healthy habits, adapting procedures for the needs of children, and supervising oral health as children develop.

As a dental specialty, pediatric dentists are usually required to complete two years of post-doctor training that focuses on the special needs and concerns of child patients. Most developed countries today provide board certification for these practitioners, as well as a specialist in order for a dentist to represent her / himself specifically as a pediatric dentist.

One of the most important aspects of this field of dentistry is to teach children the importance of healthy teeth. Subsequently, much effort is put into preventing tooth decay and teaching habits and behaviors that prevent decay and gum disease. Indeed, many scientific studies indicate that poor oral hygiene can be related to poor social relationships, poor school performance, and issues with self esteem and confidence. Not unexpectedly then, pediatric dentists are experts in communicating with children regarding eating habits and how they affect your teeth, brushing and flossing, and general oral care.

Pedodontics relations on a wide range of disciples, techniques, procedures, and skills. Behavior guidance, care for medically and developmentally compromised patients, and supervision of oral growth are all much more important to dentists of children and adolescents. Furthermore, even the procedures for children tend to differ from adults; pharmacology is just one example of the many practices that are significantly different for adults and children.

So while pediatric dentistry shares many of the fundamentals of good dental practice, there are some important distinctions as well. Children are constantly learning and adapting and caring for their oral health requires a more flexible and specialized approach. Some stark facts about children and their dental health only highlight the need for qualified pediatric dentists. Almost 50% of … More

As more and more dental procedures get performed in the US with implants and cosmetic dentistry, one of the main goals is to perform them in a single setting. Typically, different types of dental restorations, including veneers, crowns, orthodontic appliances, bridges, inlays and onlays take multiple stages to complete.

CAD is short for Computer Aided Design and CAM means Computer Aided Manufacturing. Prior to the mid 1980’s, neither existed for dentistry. As they began usage in the field of dental medicine in that decade, the technology was brand new, requiring way too much time to actually make something useful.

Because of this, it was relegated to the dental fabrication laboratory, rather than in the actual dental practice. As software and hardware improved over the next decade, utilization in the actual practice became a reality. Thus implants can be made in the office that are aesthetic, durable, and well fitting in a matter of hours instead of days.

Prior to CAD/CAM, a lot of dental restorations required temporary implants. Crowns for instance, necessitated placement of a temporary implant for several weeks. Then it was removed after the permanent crown was fabricated in a laboratory, shipped in, and then placed. The bonding material sets within hours, so the newest methods with CAD/CAM truly takes only one setting for the procedure.

So how does the CAD/CAM process work? The restorations are fabricated from solid blocks of white porcelain or composite resin. This is called milling and matches the shade of the restored tooth. So there are quite a few shades of white from which to choose. Once an image is take of the problem tooth, the computer uses the image with its software to create a fix for the “problem” which is a virtual restoration.

The software takes this data and sends it to the milling chamber where the restoration is carved from the selected shade of white block made out of either resin or porcelain. Once the implant is finalized, the backside of the restoration is etched with acid along with the front of the tooth. This makes for a microscopic increase of surface area on both opposing surfaces, and then bonding materials allow for the fusion between the milled restoration and the existing tooth.

CAD/CAM restorations have been a “disruptive” technology in dentistry for a few reasons. The first is the time factor for the patient not having to undergo multiple … More

This type of dentistry is mainly used in replacing a missing tooth. However, apart from replacing a missing tooth, implants also improves your smile, self confidence, looks, and the way you speak.

1. Any dentist can perform the procedure Implant dentistry is a very technique-sensitive and skilled procedure that requires several years of practicing to perfect. Most people think that all dentists can place implants, where in fact, only periodontists and oral surgeons are trained for this during their schooling. These are the only dental specialists you need to consider when you require implant dentistry.

2. Dental implants require heavy maintenance

They function the same way as normal teeth and therefore, require no more maintenance as the surrounding teeth. Regular brushing and flossing should do the trick.

3. The placement of implants is painful

The fact is, if done correctly, implant dentistry can be one of the least painful procedures. During the placement of dental implants, the patient remains under anesthesia, so the procedure is essentially pain free. However, during recovery, patients may experience mild soreness and discomfort near the affected area. This is temporary.

4. Implant dentistry is costly

Dental implants are not cheap. However, taking into consideration, that the implants are designed to last a lifetime, not only is it an affordable treatment option, but also a great investment.

5. Dental implants are not for old people

Implants are just as successful in older patients as in youngger patients. In fact, dental implants are more popular along the older crowd.

6. Implant dentistry is a relatively new procedure

This type of dentistry was innovated and performed successfully back in the late 1960s.

7. Dental implants costs more than dental bridges

Yes, the initial upfront payment for implants is more expensive. However, the long term savings are sure to make up for it. Dental bridges usually needs to be replaced every 10 years, where dental implants are made to last a lifetime.

Having healthy teeth and gum's makes a big difference in our enjoyment in life's little pleasures. Having a nice smile with all your teeth, biting into a juicy apple or corn on the cob, kissing someone you care about, these are pleasures that vanish quickly when we do not take care of out teeth and gum's.

Here are some tips to help you in maintaining healthy gum's and teeth, so you can do all the eating, smiling, and kissing you want. We can keep our teeth healthy all our life as long as we follow some basic habits.

I know we have all heard this but it needs to be said again, brush your teeth at least 2 times a day and floss at least once a day. Take the time to brush right even if it means using a timer. Brush in a circular motion instead of just up and down, similar to a sweeping motion. Do not forget to brush the tongue either, that is where a lot of germs hide that cause bad breath.

Get some dental floss that is easy for you to use. Do not buy the rolled floss if you are not comfortable wrapping it around your fingers and flossing that way. There are many different types of floss holders that make it easy and comfortable to get the job done.

Rinse with a good mouthwash. Studies have shown that it cuts the risk of gum disease. I would suggest rinsing in the morning and the evening for best results.

If only we could cut out all the sugar beverages. I am not only talking about soda, but also juice, energy drinks, and chewing gum. You will be doing your mouth and your body a huge favor.

Take the time and money to invest in a good dentist. This will help you with any issues that may come up, plus take care of cavities, professional cleaning, and will help you keep your teeth for the rest of you life.

Can semen really whiten your teeth? Is semen good for teeth? Information about whether ejaculated human sperm can help make your teeth whiter.

Before we can make any assumptions on whether does semen whiten the teeth, the following facts should be known about ejaculate human semen before judging or coming to any conclusions.

The human semen contains a variety of ingredients, which mainly include sperm (containing DNA), citric acid, fructose, ascorbic acid, water, magnesium, enzymes, nitrogen, chlorine, potassium, creatine vitamin B12, cholesterol, phosphate, bicarbonate buffers, zinc and calcium. These are all essential for reproduction and have their own individual roles to play in the whole reproductive process, among them; calcium and zinc are held by some to be useful for the teeth, but there are no scientific proof to support that they help when it comes to whitening the teeth.

Furthermore, a comparison study between the ingredients inside a tooth whitening product and semen will give us a knowledge about the effect of the latter as a tooth whitener.

Hydrogen peroxides, hydrated silica, polyvinylpyrrolidone, potassium nitrate, calprox, baking soda, fluoride, strontium chloride and sodium tripolyphosphate are the main ingredients which are commonly found in different teeth whiteners on the market. The bleaching chemicals and ingredients mentioned above are not found in semen, although potassium and phosphates are present there, non of them are in the proper combination with other elements which can aid in whitening the teeth. Therefore it can safely be assumed that a teeth whitening toothpaste is a much better option, rather than depending on semen to do it.

However, semen ingestion is known to lower stress and raise the women's mood due to its sugar based enzymes, and a recent study also shows that selenium, an ingredient found in semen may also serve in protection against cancer, but as far as whitening of the teeth is concerned, semen does not seem to be promising at all. It would be advisable to go for a laser clinical tooth whitening session or purchase a professional at home teeth whitening kit if you want to be through about it. Any of these will give you better results, greater assurance and a whiter, brighter smile than semen.
