Dental implants are fake dental roots, usually made of titanium (a metal that is well-tolerated by the human body), inserted into the jawbone to support a prosthetic tooth or bridge.

Implants can restore any number of teeth, from a single tooth to a full arch, helping you regain your smile, and enabling you to speak, eat and laugh again with comfort and confidence.

If you are seriously considering implants for your missing teeth there are two types, based on the diameter of the device – Traditional implants and Mini dental implants. Each type has its own size and diameter.

Traditional Implant Devices
Implants have long been used as a sure shot way to replace missing teeth over the last three decades. This type of implants is used to replace a lost or decay tooth, multiple teeth or a bridge or full denture. It is also used to hold removable dentures in proper place. Endosteal (in the bone), Subperiosteal (in the bone) and Plate form are the four main types of implants commonly used in implant dentistry today.

In this type of teeth implantation a tiny screw is fixed on the jaw bone through a small incision in the gum tissue. After few weeks when the jawbone is fully healed and implant is fused to the bone, a crown will be loaded on the implant. The whole procedures results in a new, vibrant smile with the most natural-looking permanent prosthetic teeth that feel and work like your natural teeth.

Mini Dental Implants
Like traditional dental implants, mini dental implants are used to restore lost teeth. They are mainly used to replace front teeth, pre-molars, small teeth and teeth located in a narrow area.

This single-piece titanium screw has a head shaped like a ball on top. The head of this miniature titanium implant consists of a single rubber O-ring that allows it to connect into the socket of the denture or the prosthetic tooth.

The Real Difference between Regular and Mini Dental Implants

A mini implant is significantly thinner compared to a regular implant. The diameter of mini dental implants is generally between 1.8mm to 2.9mm compared to 4mm to 6mm for … More

Dentists have struggled over the years to treat this condition employing a number of techniques. Removable partial dentures, conventional fixed partial dentures, Maryland Bridges and conventional dental implants are employed with varying degrees of success and patient satisfaction. This article will focus on the benefits of using Mini Dental Implants with fixed crowns to treat such conditions.

Patients with congenitally missing maxillary incisors are often treated in their childhood. Orthodontics is typically employed and completed resulting in an unavoidable facial concave defect in the maxilla and converging adjacent root tips. Correspondingly, this space is missing both in buccal-lingual and a mesio-distal dimensions. The facial concavity may be treated successfully by block only grafting with fixation but the incorrect roots remain problematic. Also, the block grafting requires multiple surgeries, donor site morbidity and considering the patient age and growth potential may be premature. This procedure is best treated by a practitioner with significant skill usually requiring referral.

This complicated treatment also increases the treatment cost. When compounded by consequent implant placement, second stage surgeries and restorative visits, the teenage patient and parent will most certainly object and begin looking for an alternative. Although we are justified to charge for our time and efforts, implant alternatives do exist that are predictable and cost effective.

Mini Implants have been demonstrated to function well in fixed applications. The MDI has allowed us to offer a more affordable solution to patients. The price of the implant parts are reasonable, often under $ 100. Conventional crown fabrication or CAD / CAM may be used without expensive abutments or transfer pieces.

Placement of the MDI is completed following the same general protocol as used for denture stabilization. A Max thread MDI is used to achieve initial stability and a longer implant is recommended. Using the same concepts for placement of large diameter implants, appropriate radiographs and surgical /orative guides are prepared. Placement is accomplished with the use of surgical guides and guide tool devices. Temporaries are fabricated with resin. Impressions may be made at the time of placement or may be reserved for a post operative appointment following osseointegration. Temporary crowns are cemented. Final crowns placed.

Mini dental implants are considered a long term means of denture stabilization. Dental implants are made with titanium alloy and are used as a root device to help secure many different dental prostheses such as dentures, crowns and others. The standard implants are usually around 4mm – 5mm in diameter, but implants that have a measurement larger than 3mm in diameter is considered as a standard implant. Mini implants on the other hand are those with diameters measuring less than 3mm.

There are a lot of advantages in having mini dental implants. The first one is that it costs about 50% lesser than the conventional implant, so having this procedure done became much more affordable to the public. Also, because of its small size (about the size of a toothpick), the mini implants are considered less invasive. More often than not, they can be inserted directly into the lower jaw without having to cut an incision in the gums. A local anesthetic is usually enough for this procedure and is injected directly over the implant site.

Another great thing about the mini implants is that they allow loading of the prostheses immediately after the procedure. With conventional dental implants a patient has to wait for about three months up to six months before the implant integrates and the dentist can fit their dentures. But with these mini implants, patients can have their dentures loaded right after the implant is put in place. They can also be used to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.

There is a very specialized bone in the mouth called the alveolar bone. This bone is not found anywhere in the body and its specific function it to hold the roots of the teeth in place. In cases of teeth extraction, this bone melts away (a process called boned resorption). Usually the standard implant is not a good choice if there is an extensive amount of bone loss because it might affect the integration of the implant or it would require additional procedures such as bone grafts.. Fortunately this is not the case for mini implants. Because if their “mini” size, these implants don’t require that much bone in order to work.

A bit of caution though, because poor oral hygiene can cause a certain gum disease called peri-implantitis that presents around the site of the implant. To avoid this, patients should take … More
